South Eastern Coalfields Limited off guard on coal thefts, says Chhattisgarh district administration; mine officials defend

RAIPUR: Days after a viral video surfaced showing a large number of people collecting and carrying coal purportedly from a SECL open cast coal mine, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) management, paramilitary forces, district administration and police are at loggerheads over how to deal with coal theft from the mines.

While the viral video is yet to be authenticated, SECL’s stance is that it had been regularly writing to the police department about the “coal and diesel theft” at its different mines, state police officials say that all the complaints received in the past six months were disposed of. Moreover, police have suddenly received the bulk of 60-speed post envelopes comprising letters of complaints with past dates, at Kusmunda police station and police have summoned the complainant's security officer for recording his statement.
