South Dakota Governor Banned From Indigenous Tribal Lands

'Brazil is Indigenous Land' festival, in Brasilia

All nine indigenous tribes in South Dakota have made the decision to prohibit Governor Kristi Noem from entering their lands. The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe recently voted in favor of barring the Republican governor from its reservation.

The decision came after a series of events, including a meeting between Flandreau President Tony Reider and Governor Noem. President Reider expressed concerns about Noem's comments that were deemed offensive to tribal nations within the state. The tribe requested an apology and clarification from the governor, which has not been provided as of yet.

Noem's controversial remarks about tribal leaders and drug cartels earlier this year sparked a wave of backlash from various tribes in South Dakota. The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, Yankton Sioux Tribe, Standing Rock Sioux, Crow Creek Sioux, Rosebud, Cheyenne River Sioux, Oglala Sioux, and Lower Brule Sioux tribes have all taken similar actions to ban Noem from their reservation lands.

Despite the bans, Governor Noem has stood by her statements regarding border security and the presence of Mexican drug cartels on Native American reservations. She has emphasized the need for cooperation to address issues of violence and illegal activities in the state.

In response to the bans, Noem has expressed hope for collaboration with tribal leaders to find solutions for safer communities and improved educational outcomes. However, tensions remain high as the tribes stand firm in their decision to exclude the governor from their territories.

While Noem's name had previously been considered for political positions, her recent controversies and statements have led to a decline in her standing. The ongoing dispute between the governor and the indigenous tribes in South Dakota highlights the complex relationship between state officials and tribal communities.

Despite the banishments and disagreements, efforts are being made to enhance tribal law enforcement in the state. New programs and initiatives have been introduced to support local law enforcement agencies and strengthen relationships with tribal nations.
