South Ayrshire schools to close for day during teacher strike action

All South Ayrshire schools are to close during next Thursday's strike action by teachers.

Education chiefs have tonight confirmed primary, secondary and special schools will fail to open to pupils during the 24-hour walk-out.

It follows the announcement earlier today from East Ayrshire Council that all of their schools will also shut.

A South Ayrshire spokesperson said: "Council primary, secondary and special schools in South Ayrshire will be closed to pupils on Thursday 24 November. The required closures are as a result of national industrial action by Teaching Trade Unions, EIS and AHDS.

"Only school teaching staff are affected by the industrial action, however given the impact on our ability to deliver education, the decision has been taken to keep pupils off that day.

"Arrangements will be put in place to ensure that pupils entitled to a free school meal will still be able to get one on 24 November."

The council’s five standalone nurseries will not be affected by the industrial action and will operate as normal.

They are: Cherry Tree Early Years Centre, Girvan Early Years Centre, Prestwick North Early Years Centre, Space Place Early Years Centre and Wallacetown Early Years Centre.

Bosses at North Ayrshire Council are expected to confirm their stance tomorrow morning.
