South Ayrshire Council to consider additional public holiday

South Ayrshire Council is to consider an additional public holiday.

The local authority has confirmed it will not adopt the same approach as East Ayrshire Council when it comes to a public holiday next week.

Schools in both East and South Ayrshire will be closed on Friday and Monday as part of a scheduled September weekend break.

However, East Ayrshire will also have Tuesday off to accommodate for the Queen's funeral on Monday.

South Ayrshire schools will reopen on Tuesday as normal but councillors are to consider an additional public holiday at a meeting later this month.

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: "There is a local public holiday in South Ayrshire on Friday 16 and Monday 19 of September.

"All council operated schools will be closed during the holiday.

"The addition of another public holiday will be considered by councillors at a meeting on Tuesday, September 27.

"In the meantime, out with the closures on 16 and 19 September, our schools will be open as normal."

We told you earlier today that East Ayrshire is pushing its public holiday back by 24 hours with schools now off on Tuesday, September 20 as well.

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: "Since Her Majesty’s State Funeral will take place on Monday, September 19, 2022 (which falls on our September Public Holiday), the council will move the Public Holiday from Monday, September 19, 2022 to Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

"This means that schools will be closed on the Tuesday as well as the Monday."

North Ayrshire pupils will be off on Monday, September 19 for an in-service day with teachers set to be in schools.

North Ayrshire Council confirmed that pupils will return to the classroom on Tuesday.
