South African living in Edinburgh shares things she finds weird about city flats

A South African woman living in Edinburgh has raised eyebrows after uploading a video listing all the things in her home that she finds unusual.

Whilst everything on the list may seem familiar and not out of the ordinary at all, it's interesting to see some people's reaction to living in a city and country that do things completely different to back home.

Sheree Innes-Grant posted the short montage video on TikTok, listing a few things within her Edinburgh home that were relatively new to her.

The first peculiar feature on the list is the fact that in Scotland, and the rest of the UK for that matter, showers over baths are extremely common.

In most old tenement buildings, a shower will be present over the bath, to save space, and money. You're likely to see, in more modern apartments and homes, a separate shower area and bathtub, which is clearly popular in South Africa, as it had Sheree puzzled, but also intrigued as it seems like a great way of saving space.

Next, is the addition of coat hooks, as Sheree says: "Coat hooks in every house. Jackets are a must."

Although these are usually found in most flats and homes, sometimes on the back of doors, or sometimes as you come in the front door, coat hooks are definitely something that we don't pay any attention to, but would probably miss if they weren't there.

Obviously, back home, where the climate is incredibly warmer and more consistent, coats are probably barely needed in South Africa, so why would you need hooks to hang them up?

The third 'strange' addition to Sheree's Edinburgh home is the cupboard under the stairs. She added the caption: "Random room under the stairs?? Harry Potter lives there."

In most homes, there are various storage cupboards and rooms throughout the building, some of which can be found directly under the stairs. This is another addition that seems fairly common within the UK, but may not be in other countries.

Storage cupboards in a home or flat are definitely a necessity, and an addition that people in the UK would definitely miss if they didn't exist. So, although it may seem weird to people from outside of the UK, they're very much a feature that will continue to be included for years to come.
