South Africa rocked by two separate mass shootings with at least 27 people dead

  • At least 17 people were killed and 15 others injured when eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg.
  • Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who robbed victims of their mobile phones and set two vehicles ablaze before fleeing the scene, with the motive behind the attack currently unknown.
  • In a separate overnight incident, 10 people were killed and 11 others wounded in a mass shooting at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, Cape Town, with no arrests made yet.
  • These incidents follow a series of recent mass shootings linked to gang rivalries, extortion, and illegal firearms, including an attack last week in KwaZulu-Natal that left 12 people dead.
  • South Africa continues to struggle with severe violent crime, recording nearly 60 homicides a day, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy soldiers to assist police in high-crime regions earlier this year.
