Sophie Wessex 'deeply saddened' by death of woman, 81, hit by police escort motorcade

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, is "deeply saddened" by the death of a woman who was hit by a motorcycle that was part of the royal's police escort.

Helen Holland was "thrown 40 feet across the road" after being struck by the motorbike, an eyewitness claimed at the time.

The 81-year-old was hit at a junction in Earl's Court, west London, on the afternoon of May 10.

Announcing her death, her son Martin told the BBC that she fought "for her life for nearly two weeks... but irreversible damage to her brain finally ended the battle".

She sustained "multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries" after being hit while using the "safe route of [a] pedestrian crossing", he added.

Today, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away.

"Her Royal Highness's deepest condolences and sympathies go to all of Ms Holland's family."

It is understood Sophie will be in touch privately with Ms Holland's family.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been investigating the incident and has taken CCTV from nearby properties for examination.

A spokesman for the watchdog said: "We can confirm a woman who was involved in a collision with a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) motorcycle in Earl's Court on May 10 sadly died in hospital yesterday.

"Helen Holland, 81, was taken to hospital following the collision with a police motorcycle that was on escort duties on West Cromwell Road around 3.21 pm that afternoon.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends following their loss. We began an independent investigation after we were informed by the force of the incident that night.

"Our investigation is at an early stage.

"We also issued a witness appeal last week and would still like to hear from anyone who saw or recorded any part of this incident who is yet to speak to us."

Retired antiques dealer Martin Hennessy, 62, previously told the Mirror how he saw police cars swarming the scene following the collision.

He said: "When you get to the junction you have to step out to see if anything is coming, that’s when she was hit.

"I came out to walk the dogs and that when I saw this thoroughfare. She’d been thrown across the road and the ambulance were treating her."

Police said at the time there had been no other injuries and enquiries into the crash were ongoing.

The motorcycle was part of the duchess' police escort (PA)

A spokesperson said: "At approximately 15:21hrs on Wednesday, 10 May a police motorcycle on escort duties was involved in a collision with a member of the public on West Cromwell Road, Earls Court, SW5.

"Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended and a woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to hospital. She remains there in a critical condition. Her family have been informed.

"There are no reports of any other injuries."

In a previous statement, Buckingham Palace said the Duchess was "grateful for the swift response of emergency services and will keep abreast of developments".

It went on: "Further comment at this time would not be appropriate while the incident is being investigated.

"The Duchess' heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family."
