Sophia Bush’s One Tree Hill Reboot Is Already Plagued With Drama & BTS Shady Cast Comments

You might have heard about the One Tree Hill reboot that’s being helmed by OG stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan, who will be reprising their roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer. But if you dig a lil’ deeper, you’ll soon find that Tree Hill isn’t exactly the place where “everything’s better and everything’s safe”.

Bush recently let it slip that the One Tree Hill sequel has been in the works for “close to half a decade” on her podcast Drama Queens, and I’m conflicted. While I love that the women are able to take their power back from a show that had a dark side — creator and showrunner Mark Schwahn was accused of sexual harassment by 18 female cast and crew members back in 2017 — I don’t think we need another reboot.

Plus, it looks like there are a bunch of core cast members who have made shady comments about being left out of the loop, and I don’t wanna enter any One Tree Hill universe without Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) and Haley James Scott (Bethany Joy Lenz), the heart of the show.

The show originally ran for nine seasons from 2003 to 2012, and yes, I’ve watched every single episode, even *after* the show jumped the shark. You know, when a dog ate a replacement heart intended for villain Dan Scott (Paul Johansson). It was filled with juicy teen drama, a love triangle with Chad Michael Murray, bizarre kidnapping storylines and short basketball players making it to the NBA — with around 22 episodes per season, writers really got to flesh characters out and go wild, unlike this eight-episode nonsense we now get on streaming platforms.

While those involved seem veeeerry excited about returning to Tree Hill, some cast members found out about the project when reading the news. That’s gotta sting! And look, they’re definitely not mincing their words.

One Tree Hill cast members low-key shade the reboot

It seems like Lafferty and Joy Lenz aren’t going to be returning for the reboot, and if you read between the lines, it sounds like they haven’t been asked back.

“I am absolutely open to being a part of a revisiting to Tree Hill. But as far as this particular [reboot], I don’t know. It’s so early,” Joy Lenz told Variety

“I don’t know if it’s in pilot, I don’t know if it’s in series. I don’t know where it’s at.”

Her onscreen husband, Lafferty, dodged the question and said he was focusing on his other projects at the minute.

“Personally, I’m blown away by the fans that make a conversation [about a reboot] even possible. Professionally, I’m completely focused on finding Everyone is Doing Great season two the right home,” he said.

“Until then, consider me grateful for this moment and cheering everyone on!”

The pair both said they “don’t know” if the reboot would work without Naley, with Lafferty saying he didn’t want to “speculate” on anything.

Shantel VanSanten, who played Quinn James from 2009 to 2012, said she wasn’t given a heads-up about the One Tree Hill reboot.

“I’ve heard about it because I read the news with all of you guys. I don’t know anything about it,” she said on the Scrubbing In podcast.

“I would do it if it was about fairness and inclusivity. That’s my truth. I literally would know as much as you guys, I probably know less.”

Yikes, that sounds POINTED.

According to Elle, Chad Michael Murray — who played Lucas Scott for 132 episodes — also has “no plans to return” for the sequel. Considering he isn’t on great terms with his ex-wife Bush, this kinda makes sense. But can we really have a universe where Peyton isn’t with Lucas? Sigh.

What’s the One Tree Hill reboot about?

Deadline reported that the One Tree Hill reboot will be a sequel series set 20 years after the show ended. Executive-produced by Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton Morgan, Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles, it has writer and executive producer Becky Hartman Edwards on board. Sources say it is currently in development with Warner Bros. TV and it’s believed that Mark Schwahn will not be involved.

The plot will follow besties Brooke and Peyton who are raising teens who are facing similar challenges the characters came up against in the original show, like “love, insecurities and grief”.

In late August, Bush and Burton Morgan confirmed the news by sharing the same message on Instagram.

“What if you really can go back home? If there’s an opportunity to team with brilliant creatives and build a space where all our friends can show off their talents? Own our history? Reclaim our turf? Honour our fans? Sign us up,” they wrote.

“There’s only one Tree Hill, after all. And you — the OTH Fam — have shown us that it’s not just an idea. It really is the place where everything’s better and everything’s safe.”

It’s just early days yet, so aside from Burton Morgan and Bush, the rest of the cast hasn’t been confirmed. There’s also no timeline as to when the show will start filming, but it seems like behind-the-scenes goss is going to keep emerging. I’m here for it!!!!
