Sony has reaffirmed its decision to stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation titles from January 2028, despite mounting criticism from gamers and collectors.
Starting in January 2028, all newly released PlayStation games will be available only in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail partners. The company clarified that the move will not affect games released before the deadline, which will continue to be sold on physical discs.
The announcement sparked backlash from players concerned about game ownership, preservation, and the future of physical media. However, during Sony's earnings call on July 31, the company made it clear that it will proceed with the transition.
"There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing," Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said through an interpreter during the Q&A session. "It's not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content. Digitalization is progressing."
