Sony's PS5 Lineup Hikes Prices By as Much as $150—Is It Still Because of GPU, RAM Shortage?

Sony is raising the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles, affecting each model in the lineup and adding as much as $150 to the price tag.

Sony's PS5 Line Price Hike: As Much As $150 More

Sony announced via the PlayStation Blog that it is hiking the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles yet again. The latest announcement unveiled that all models in the lineup are affected.

The company said that the reason behind this is still due to the "continued pressures in the global economic landscape," specifically the RAM and GPU shortage in the industry.

Here is the latest suggested retail pricing from Sony that will take effect starting April 2:

  • PlayStation 5 Digital - $599.99 (from $499.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Standard - $649.99. (from $549.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Pro - $899.99 (from $749.99)
  • PlayStation Portal - $249.99 (from $199)

GPU, RAM Shortage Still Affects Tech Industry?

In 2020, the world also saw a significant shortage in GPUs as there was a massive demand in the market, but manufacturers were not able to keep up because of the lockdown protocols. There was also a massive shift to remote working, which led to many purchasing new devices or components, as well as the infamous crypto mining.

Next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X were affected by the GPU shortage, which led to these gaming devices seeing stock issues in the market. Gamers and scalpers all battled for stocks when retailers, the direct PlayStation website, the Microsoft Store, and more listed new stocks on their respective websites.

The rise of generative AI and its rapid development process, including the arrival of many startups looking to join the race, has driven down the stocks of many computer components again.

And this time, many consumer tech products, including gaming consoles like the PS5, are again facing this issue.
