Much to the surprise of pre-release naysayers, Sonic Frontiers has been selling like hotcakes.
On Monday, Sega announced that Sonic Frontiers has sold more than 2.5 million copies since its launch on Nov. 6, 2022. That figure includes unit sales across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC – making it one of last month’s bestselling releases. Quite an accomplishment when stuff like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and God of War Ragnarok is nipping at its heels.
Sonic Frontiers also came close to taking home the 2022 Game Awards category for Player’s Voice but ultimately lost to Genshin Impact.

Sega has lots of post-launch support in store for Sonic Frontiers, already releasing an in-depth DLC roadmap for 2023. Sonic Team lead Takashi Iizuka also claims that this game represents the franchise’s future. Mostly in terms of direction for the mainline console entries and not so much the smaller side-scrolling titles like Sonic Origins.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s theatrical success earlier this year undoubtedly boosted overall interest in the franchise, too. Earning $71 million during its opening weekend at the box office. A third movie and Knuckles the Echidna spinoff series are also in the works.
