Son Heung-Min surgery confirmed as Tottenham dealt double injury blow ahead of Liverpool clash

Son Heung-Min will miss Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool as he is set to undergo surgery on a fractured eye injury he sustained during Tottenham's 2-1 victory over Marseille on Tuesday.

The forward was substituted in the first half of Spurs' final Champions League group stage game after sustaining the injury, but Tottenham have not disclosed the timescale of Son's injury; he is due to participate in the World Cup in Qatar with South Korea later this month.

"We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye," read a club statement on Wednesday evening. "The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

"Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course."

Son's absence is the latest blow for manager Antonio Conte, who is also expected to also be without defender Cristian Romero and Richarlison for the visit of Jurgen Klopp's side to north London on Sunday. The Argentine has been out of action for a week and therefore missed the last-gasp win over the Ligue 1 outfit, which secured safe passage into the knockout phases of the Champions League for Conte's side.

The Mirror report that while the defender is not a doubt for the World Cup, his return has been pushed back and will miss this weekend's Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Meanwhile, Richarlison has not featured since leaving the field against former club Everton last month, with what was later diagnosed as a calf strain.

Forward Dejan Kulusevski, who has not featured since September, is also ruled out of Sunday's game.
