Son Heung-min interest justified as Liverpool search for Sadio Mane replacement

If losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid on Saturday night in Paris wasn't bad enough for Liverpool, less than 24 hours later the prospect of Sadio Mane never wearing the iconic red shirt became a realistic one.

Straight away, the attention turns to who is capable of replacing someone who has been so vital to the winning machine Jurgen Klopp has built during his time at Liverpool. Not many can fill the boots of Mane - who has been instrumental in Liverpool winning all there is to be won - but Son Heung-min could be that man.

After the news of Mane wanting to embark on a new challenge broke - possibly in Germany with Bayern Munich - it came to light that Son could have been the subject of a huge bid from Liverpool, but only if Tottenham Hotspur had not qualified for the Champions League.

Son enjoyed his best season to date in the Premier League and took a share of the Golden Boot, alongside Mohamed Salah, with his 23 goals in the season. The South Korean has often been overshadowed by Harry Kane at Tottenham, but not lately. A strange one though, was him missing out of the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year.

The 2020 Puskas Award winner has shown on countless occasions the sheer quality he possesses - a quality that would see him fit seamlessly into a Liverpool attack that may well be missing the influence of Mane next season.

Perhaps Son donning the red shirt of Liverpool is just a pipe dream, but it is well known that Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of the forward and was seen to be in deep conversation with him after the 1-1 draw with Spurs at Anfield in May.

You may ask, why has the news come out now about Liverpool previously considering a bid for Son? Antonio Conte's side qualifying for the Champions League has all but ruled out a move for the Spurs number seven with the added finances that come with Europe's elite competition.

However, at nearly 30-years-old, Son has a serious lack of trophies on his CV and a player of his calibre deserves to win it all in the game, but will he do this with Spurs? Doubtful. With Conte set to stay at Spurs next season, it is likely Son would not push for a move if the opportunity came as he is loved at the club.

Strangely, Son has rarely been linked with a move away from North London, despite how talented he is and the fact he would add to the likes of Manchester City or Liverpool. He is a player who has slipped under the radar, but last season gave him the recognition he deserves.

The level of Liverpool's interest in Son is yet to be revealed, or whether they truly were interested at all, but one thing is for sure and that is that Son is perhaps one of the only players in the world who could adequately replace the outgoing Mane.

With City already signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, and looking to make more signings this summer, Liverpool are facing the prospect of one of their most important players leaving the club. The Reds need to show ambition in the market if they are to go one step further next season and win the Premier League.
