Durham edge Northants in thriller, Glamorgan see off Surrey and more: county cricket – as it happened

Bedingham sinks Northants to send Durham clear at top

A glorious hundred from David Bedingham, his fourth of the year, swung Durham over the line against Northamptonshire – a six-wicket victory leaves them 32 points clear at the top of Division Two.

It was nip and tuck all day, until Bedingham, in partnership with Colin Ackermann, Ben Stokes’s substitute, pressed the button with an hour to go, lassoing Harry Conway on one leg for four.

Bedingham was all smiles afterwards, even when quizzed on Stokes. “He’s a good lad,” he said. “He brings extra energy to the group so its always cool having him around – but he’s probably back where he belongs.”

There was another knuckle-gnawer at Canterbury where reborn Kent beat Middlesex by 49 runs. Middlesex were set 231 but Zafar Gohar, unbeaten on 66, ran out of partners. Matt Milnes finished with five for 31.

Spin was king at New Road on a day when 14 wickets fell. Worcestershire skittled Gloucestershire for 185, thanks to five wickets for Fateh Singh, leaving them 87 to win. Graeme van Buuren took four for 36 but Worcestershire scraped home.

Glamorgan beat Surrey thanks to half-centuries from Kiran Carlson and Colin Ingram, despite a cover-your-eyes start to their innings when Billy Root, in his first game of the season, was run out for zero, finding himself at the same end as his opening partner, Asa Tribe. It was Glamorgan’s first win over Surrey for 11 years.

At Taunton, Craig Overton eased to his third Championship century of the summer, and Thomas Rew made 149, as Somerset drew with Warwickshire.

And after one last thriller for the road, that’s it from us. Wins for Glamorgan, Durham, Kent and Worcestershire leaves an intriguing couple of tables to tide us over till August 20. Until then, have a wonderful summer, and may your living rooms always be shaded.

Durham BEAT Northants by six wickets!

A quick single and handshakes all round with 2.4 overs left! A fabulous innings from Bedingham and a great team performance despite Ben Stokes being whisked away half way through. And that gives Durham a 32 point gap over second placed Kent.

Chester-le-Street: Durham 405 and 296-4 BEAT Northants 450 and 250 by six wickets.

Durham 23 points, Northants points

Bedingham, with no effort at all, slams Sanderson for six to reduce the target to eight.

Fifty for Colin Ackermann

Let’s hear it for the sub!

100 for David Bedingham!

What an innings – the promotion clincher? A fourth of the year, a 20th for Durham – 150 balls, seven fours, two sixes. Durham now need 28 and Ben Sanderson (23.3-4-56-1)is on his last, wobbly, legs.

Then there was one – Durham need 53 off 10.5 overs. I think they’ll do this with sixpence to spare. I’d better start writing up for the paper, but will pop back.

With 58 needed, Northants turn to Saif Zaib…

Worcestershire BEAT Gloucestershire by five wickets!

New Road: Worcestershire 388 and87-5 BEAT Gloucestershire 289 and 185 by five wickets

Front foot regret for Calvin Harrison and Bedingham slams six into the crowd.

Kent BEAT Middlesex by 49 runs

Gohar stranded on 66. Five wickets for Milnes, three for Dudgeon. The irrepressible Kent results machine thunders on.

Canterbury: Kent 416 and 257 BEAT Middlesex 443 and 181 by 49 runs

Kent 23 pts, Middlesex 7 pts.

Bedingham is caught by Guthrie on the boundary but – somehow - Calvin Harrison has bowled a no ball.

Van Buuren now has four wickets, Worcs struggling through treacle to 70-5. Need just 17.

Northants call for Ben Sanderson with Durham needing 86. They need to get Bedingham (72) out sharpish, he’s in the zone.

Somerset DRAW with Warwickshire

Taunton: Somerset 208 and 435 DRAW with Warwickshire 330 and 98-2

Somerset 11pts, Warwickshire 13pts.

Middlesex are nine down. 55 need. Gohar still there.

I think Bedingham might have pressed the magic button – he shimmies and on one leg pans Conway through the covers – 97 needed.

Fifty for Bedingham

A glorious shot by Bedingham to reach fifty, feet wide apart, fat crack, wristy smack through the covers: 104 balls, four fours, one six and averaging 80 this season.

Fifty for Gohar

Getting squeaky at Canterbury. Just 66 needed. Two wickets left. Zafar Gohar has a confident fifty with power to add.

It talks about football, but is equally relevant to cricket. I was told yesterday that at the Women’s World Cup the ICC have pretty much sold the scoreboards to Aramco, with just one scoreboard at each ground functioning as it was made to, rather than as a giant oil advertising board.

And a third wicket at New Road – Swanepoel caught just out of the picture by Boorman. van Buuren now has all three. But surely too late, 32 needed.

Middlesex have lost another, TRJ lbw to the tireless Milnes (4-17). 82 needed, two wickets remaining. Gohar the main obstacle, 39 not out.

We pause while Harry Conway his trousers pulled down to his ankles, has his knee strapped up.

Just did a quick round of the ground. Lots of clapping and enthusiastic geeing up from the Northants fielders. They think this is on.

The last two balls before tea bring four wides down the leg side and a glorious drive by Bedingham down the ground. Durham sup on 151-4, 145 needed at 4.7 runs an over.

Should Northants win here at CLS, there would only be two points between them and Durham at the top of Division two. Durham’s run-rate has crept up to 4.7. Harrison, long limbs, big hair, balletic approach, from the Lumley end. Durham 132-4 need 164. Most importantly, Bedingham still there on 26.

Middlesex are down to Gohar and Roland-Jones to bring home the 111 needed to win. Matt Milnes has dropped TRJ, Parkinson wheels in. Middx 120-7

Worcestershire need 87 to beat Gloucestershire

Singh five for 74, Waite 3-14. And a sub-optimal start for Worcestershire as Lategan is caught from his third ball. Worcs 0-1.

Chahar has a second at Sophia Gardens, and it is the big wicket of Kiran Carlson (67), but Glamorgan need only 61. Jobs a good ‘un.

Oh my, a fourth at CLS. Sanderson the bowler, the ball creeping off the pitch, (the “dead patch” - Martin Emmerson) and thumping into the pads of Clark who is nearly bent double. Enter Stokes sub Colin Ackermann. No pressure. Durham 108-4 need 188.

Here, under heavy cloud and floodlights, a wicket for Calvin Harrison, Rhodes caught on the back foot, lbw for 23. Cherry-hatted glee. Durham 102-3, need another 194.

Daz Ahmed a fifth wicket for Fateh Singh at New Road. The tail have done rather better than the top order (with honourable exception of Cameron Bancroft’s 56) but the lead is only 77, with one wicket in hand.

Somerset have a breakthrough – the bucket hands of Craig OVerton at slip, the left arm twirl of Jack Leach, the backwards defence of Zen Malik. Warwicks 30-1.

A second wicket at Sophia Gardens – the guilt got to Asa Tribe at last, caught behind prodding. Chahar, bowling in sunglasses, the man. If I were Glamorgan I’d be worried, he certainly has 6-35 out of nowhere potential.

Durham have lost a second wicket since lunch. Lees fishing gives a catch to second slip off Conway. durham 93-2 need another 203.

The Cricket Regulator concludes: nothing to see here

And after all that, the Cricket Regulator has determined that of the events June 7-8 involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson:

”Having carefully reviewed all currently available information, the Cricket Regulator has determined that there is insufficient evidence to establish that any regulatory breach occurred. Accordingly, no further action will be taken against either player.”

Trouble, more trouble for Middlesex in bright sunshie just before lunch as Leus du Plooy gets an inside edge onto his stumps. Middx 52-4.

The bell tolls for Gloucestershire. Fateh Singh, in only his third FC match picks up his fourth wicket, his second caught and bowled of the innings. Sorry Glos have lost six for 31 and lead by just 22 with three wickets left.

Durham need 296 to beat Northants

And they’re racing along. Big Ben McKinney and Alex Lees have hit 48 from the first 11 overs. But wait – that is the best catch I’ve seen this year. George Bartlett up, and up again, stretching with one hand, chimp reaching for a branch at deep gully. McKinney gone for 23. Durham 48-1.

Updated

Gloucestershire are in a pickle too – 106-5, lead Worcs by just seven.

Meanwhile at Taunton, Jack Leach celebrates his 35th birthday by thrashing Suthar for six. Somerset 410-8.

Middlesex need 231 to beat Kent!

And it’s not too pretty either. New unstoppable Kent have reduced Middx to 27-2, both wickets to Matt Milnes. Holden and du Plooy with the rebuild.

Thomas Rew out for 149

A standing ovation for the 18 year old ginger prince. What an astonishing innings. Notts finally got him out turning Webster off his legs and into the gloves of Davies. Overton also out for 111 – the partnership 233. Somerset 390-8, lead Warwicks by 268.

His championship career now reads: 0, 30, 68, 127*, 35, 149

Updated

Glamorgan need 195 to win

And, oh, what is that? Horrendous running. Billy Root called for the run, Tribe started, but then went back and somehow they both ended up at the non-striker’s end. A furious Root stalks off, run out 0. Glamorgan 0-1.

Updated

I was going to say it was weird how Tom Lawes was allowed to swap for Atkinson despite being a much better batter but in fact they average almost exactly the same, 19.something. This game is skipping away from Glamorgan – the lead 189. It should be enough but….The last pair have now added 99 – the lead 189 over Surrey.

Durham are rattling through Northants now. Another catch by Ben McKinney, who has been a safe pair of hands since he dropped Vasconcelos in the first over of Ben Stokes spell on Friday! Sanderson the man gone, a second wicket for Aldridge. Northants 240-9.

A hundred for Craig Overton

The partnership between Tom Rew and Craig Overton has now passed 200 – the lead over Warwickshire 244 – and Overton has a hundred of his own! A third of what has been a rich season. still think he would have done a job at The Oval.

A seventh wicket for Tom Helm at Canterbury. Parkinson followed shortly afterwards for a duck and Kent, 257-9, – lead Middlesex by 230. Game on!

And Romeo’s pets’ corner is open here – place the pet to the CCLive reader.

I’ve just been chatting to young Thomas Ridley who is doing the Counter Press website for Durham cricket, The Chester. Worth a look for those of you who want more Durham news.

Look up to see Guthrie striding off, driving to mid on into the hands of a diving mid-on, Ben Raine. Northants 230-8.

Time to go round the grounds.

And Potts strikes! Bartlett, surprised, pops one up to backward point.northants 204-7.

Matthew Potts throws his bowling marker on the ground and is opening the bowling from the Finchale end. It’s still quite nice and cool here in north country, long may it last.

Roundup: Leicestershire canter to first top-tier win in 23 years

On the day the England and Wales Cricket Board whisked Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson away from County Championship action, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Hampshire and Derbyshire stole the show, tucking wins under their belt within three days.

At Grace Road, Leicestershire, without a win this summer, rolled over Yorkshire by an innings and 39 runs – their first victory in Division One since 2003. Dan Moriarty (51), with Dom Bess (40) and then Jack White (21), bashed 95 for the last two wickets, but it was too little, too late.

Hampshire’s dreadful season also had a timely fillip, beating Sussex by 118 runs in front of a large and vocal crowd let in for free on Father’s Day. Sussex needed 253 for victory and Dan Hughes and Tom Alsop sailed them safely to lunch but things hit choppy waters from there as Sussex lost seven for 26, with Eddie Jack grabbing a career-best four for 36.

Essex were undone by Nottinghamshire on a turning Chelmsford pitch that had been designed for Simon Harmer. Instead, it was Notts’ spinner Liam Patterson-White who finished with career-best match figures of nine for 109 as Essex were bowled out for 221 to lose by an innings. Fergus O’Neill pocketed five for 39.

It was another miserable day for Lancashire, who were dismissed before lunch at Chesterfield to tick off a fourth defeat of the season. Derbyshire’s Ben Aitchison completed a happy match with five for 49. Seventeen-year-old Joe Moores biffed a maiden first-class 50, clonking four sixes along the way.

Stokes warmed up with Durham and there was some dismay that his substitute Colin Ackermann would not be allowed to bowl. Stokes also had a hand in Northamptonshire bringing in substitute Gus Miller, called up to replace Luke Procter, whose finger had got in the way of a Stokes straight drive.

Miller top-scored in Northants’ second innings with a pretty 61, becoming the second Augustus to play for Northants after Richard Augustus Agincourt Beresford, whose niece Elisabeth wrote The Wombles. At stumps the Northants lead was 245, the game nicely in the balance. Matthew Potts again bowled with verve to pick up three for 58.

While there was no place for James Rew in England’s squad for the third Test, his brother Thomas stroked a second century for Somerset in eight days. His A-levels done and dusted, he hit an unbeaten 133 in an enterprising fightback against Warwickshire alongside Craig Overton (89 not out) to take the match into a tantalising fourth day.

Good morning from beautiful Chester le Street and welcome to the final day of Championship cricket until August 20. Only five games to keep an eye on today after Notts and the unlikely trio of Leicestershire, Hampshire and Derby won in three days, but still plenty to enjoy especially at Taunton, where young princeling Thomas Rew and old hand Craig Overton have given Somerset something to bowl at. Amid the chaos, play always starts at 11am. Do join us.
