The Scottish Government has shared that anyone whose Carer's Allowance award has been backdated to include October 11, 2021 will receive an extra payment next month that was given to more than 90,000 claimants in December.
This means that if you did not receive the £462.80 Carer's Allowance Supplement payment in December, and your claim has been backdated, you should get the extra money in June.
Carer's Allowance Supplement is paid twice a year to people living in Scotland who receive Carer's Allowance from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). You do need to apply for it as it is paid automatically to those receiving Carer's Allowance.
It is a temporary payment until the benefit is replaced by a new devolved one, to be delivered by Social Security Scotland and was introduced to quickly increase the amount of Carer's Allowance paid to unpaid carers across the country.
How to get the backdated extra payment
You do not need to apply for Carer’s Allowance Supplement, it will be paid automatically.
To qualify for the backdated payment, you must have been:
- Getting Carer's Allowance on October 11, 2021
- Living in Scotland on October 11, 2021 or with a genuine and sufficient link to Scotland
If you're eligible for this payment, Social Security Scotland will pay it into the same account that you get your Carer's Allowance - however, most eligible carers will have received the payment in December 2021.
How much will I get in June?
If you’re getting a payment for the October 11, 2021 eligibility date, you'll get a total payment of £462.80 in June, 2022.
This is made up of:
- Coronavirus Carer's Allowance Supplement - £231.40
- Standard Carer's Allowance Supplement for April 11 eligibility date - £231.40
If you already received the extra payment in December, you will receive a £245.70 payment in June.
If you're due to receive a payment Social Security Scotland will send you a letter telling you the amount to expect.
If you're also due to receive backdated supplement payments you may receive a different amount.
It’s worth noting that this payment is taxable, but it will not affect any other benefits or Tax Credits you already receive.
You do not need to contact Social Security Scotland about this payment, the letter will confirm the details about your upcoming payment.
