Solway Sharks under-16s help Scotland win Bratislava Trophy

Six Solway Sharks players were vital in the Scotland U16 national team winning the Bratislava Trophy in Slovakia.

The three-day international tournament in Hamikovo saw the Scotland team battle against teams from Slovakia, Czechia and England.

Defencemen Ewan Duignan and Owen Rae, netminder Logan Reid and forwards Connor Lee, Bailey Thomson and Tomas Vyrostek all helped the Scotland team to three victories over five games to top the table and win the tournament.

Owen Rae had the honour of being named captain of the squad and was also named Scotland’s MVP of the tournament, recognising his huge contribution.

The players were selected for the national U16 team after taking part in a number of trials and then showing their commitment and skill levels during the national training days that happen once a month at Dumfries Ice Bowl.

Solway Sharks coach, Jamie Thomson, said: “This is a prestigious international tournament and the Scotland team played consistently well against talented opposition to take the 2023 EMF Bratislava trophy.

“We are very proud of these young Sharks, what a season they have had, a league title, Scottish Cup champions and now six of them have helped deliver this.

“They are all athletes who have a big future in our sport. To be selected to represent your country is a huge honour and to have six players in one team from Solway just shows how strong our clubs development pathway is.

“We are all over the moon for the boys and look forward to seeing more success in the future as they progress in their hockey careers.”
