Soldiers seize meth, heroin after clash with smugglers

An army patrol seized 200,000 methamphetamine pills and 750 grammes of heroin in drink bottles abandoned by armed men following a brief clash near the Myanmar border in Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai early Wednesday night.

Soldiers from the Pha Muang task force spotted three men, each carrying a rucksack and a weapon, walking near the border at Pakui village in tambon Tha Ton of Mae Ai early  Wednesday night.

The patrol leader called out to the three men to lay down their weapons and allow a search. They responded with gunfire and the soldiers fired back, according to the official report. 

The two sides exchanged shots for about five minutes before the gunmen disappared into the jungle, the report said.

The soldiers inspected the area and found 200,000 meth pills in wrapped packages and 750gm of heroin inside 30 drink bottles. 

The seized drugs were handed over to Mae Ai police.
