Solar panels likely for 14.5m-plus buildings

KOLKATA: The civic body is planning to rope in the electricity department to keep tabs on the installation of solar panels on the roofs of all multi-storey buildings, which include G+IV structures. At present, KMC building rules (147) makes it mandatory for promoters to keep provision for solar panels at all under-construction buildings over 15.5m tall. But since the height of a typical G+IV structure has also come down a little, the rule is likely to be amended to include buildings that are 14.5m tall.

If a solar panel is not installed, the buildings department reserves the right to deny completion certificate to the promoter. “We need to bring all multi-storey buildings under the mandatory installation of solar panel scheme. We will need assistance from the electricity department to keep a check on such installations. We need to conduct periodic checks on the functioning of these solar panels too,” said a KMC official.
