Socialite Brynne Edelsten has dodged questions after being charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.

The 42-year-old briefly faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday for a bail variation hearing.

The former wife of late businessman Geoffrey Edelsten is accused of trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine and possessing other drugs including ketamine, 1.4-Butanediol and vials of steroids.

Police charged Edelsten with the nine offences on December 30 after searching her Fitzroy home in Melbourne's inner north.

She was released on bail but the case returned to court on Wednesday so her mother Mariel Gordon could provide a $5000 surety.

Edelsten's other bail conditions included reporting to the police station three times a week and surrendering her passport so she could not travel overseas.

Edelsten, flanked by her mother and lawyer, did not respond to reporters' questions as she left the Melbourne court.

She is due to return for a committal mention hearing in April.

The 42-year-old United States-born socialite was married to Geoffrey Edelsten between 2009 and 2014 when she was 40 years his junior.

Mr Edelsten, who died in 2021 aged 78, was a former GP and entrepreneur who was known for saving the Sydney Swans from AFL extinction in the 1980s.

The controversial figure also spent time in jail in 1990 after soliciting a hit-man to assault a former patient, and he was chased down by more than 40 creditors in 2016.
