Thousands of people in Ireland are eligible to avail of a little-known social welfare payment.
Many could be receiving €130 a year in the form of a Telephone Support Allowance (TSA), which is an additional weekly benefit for those on certain social welfare payments and many are not aware of it.
With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to cause concern for much of the country, the TSA has been designed to help certain social welfare recipients in relation to the cost of communications or home alert systems.

The TSA is an additional weekly payment for social welfare recipients who are also getting both the Living Alone Increase and the Fuel Allowance. It is paid by the Department of Social Protection.
In 2023, the weekly payment for the Telephone Support Allowance is €2.50, which adds up to an extra €130 over the course of a year.
The allowance is paid on the same day and by the same method as your main weekly payment.
As the TSA is paid automatically to people who qualify, you do not need to apply for it and there is no application form.
If you think that you may qualify but haven’t received an automatic payment, you should contact the section in the Department of Social Protection that pays your main social welfare payment.
