Social welfare: Everything you need to know about payday changes for first February bank holiday

Social Welfare payments will experience a new disruption to normal pay dates as the first ever February Bank Holiday weekend approaches.

Just like every other Bank Holiday, banks, post offices and credit unions will all be shut for the brief break, meaning some payments will be given out early.

The first Monday of February, which falls on the 6, will mark St Brigid's Day which is now a bank holiday after the government’s announcement back in 2022.

This means thousands of social welfare recipients will receive their payments earlier than usual next month.

According to officials, the payments due over this long weekend will be made on Friday, February 3 instead of Monday, February 6.

Payments such as child benefit, which is paid on the first Tuesday of the month, which in this case is February 7, will be available as normal.

The full list of the ten Bank Holiday dates in Ireland this year are as follows:

  • New Year's Day (1 January)
  • First Monday in February, or 1 February if the date falls on a Friday
  • Saint Patrick's Day (17 March)
  • Easter Monday
  • First Monday in May
  • First Monday in June
  • First Monday in August
  • Last Monday in October
  • Christmas Day (December 25)
  • Saint Stephen's Day (December 26)

Last year it was announced that St Brigid's Day would mark the new annual public holiday from 2023. St Brigid's Day was the festival of fertility and marked the beginning of spring in Ireland.
