Anika Wells may not have a lot in common with pop stars Troye Sivan and PinkPantheress or actress Chase Infiniti.

But the communications minister has been named alongside the famous names in Time magazine's 100 most influential rising stars list.

Ms Wells was recognised by US publication for her role in helping to implement Australia's world-first social media ban for under-16s.

In a citation for the magazine written by former prime minister Julia Gillard, Ms Wells was described as a "significant voice" in growing safety calls for social media.

"She has championed world-leading reforms to protect young people from the harms of social media," Ms Gillard wrote.

"Even in the face of intense opposition from some of the world's largest tech companies, she remains steadfast.

"Future generations will look back on her landmark changes as courageous and trail-blazing."

More than 20 other countries have followed suit in implementing a ban on social media for young people after Australia's laws came into effect in December.

Australia's reforms were touted on the world stage during a visit to the United Nations in 2025, but the minister later came under fire for travel costs to New York for the event.

Since the social media ban came into effect, she has been seeking to implement further reform through enacting a digital duty of care, which would require platforms to keep users safe online.

Social media users would also be given an option to view their feed without an algorithm.

Also included on the Time list was horror director Curry Barker, actor Cooper Hoffman, US soccer star Folarin Balogun and singer Raye.
