Socceroos ride all but over for Sydney's Grant

Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant has all but closed the door on his international career, even if Socceroos boss Graham Arnold has yet to settle on a right back for next year's Asian Cup.

Grant won the last of his 21 caps 18 months ago in the World Cup qualifying loss to Japan, and in the time since Arnold hasn't stuck solid with a right-sided fullback.

Fran Karacic, Nathaniel Atkinson and Milos Degenek have all been deployed there, while St Mirren's Ryan Strain and uncapped Hibernian defender Lewis Miller have also emerged as options for Australia.

Grant, whose Sydney side begin their A-League Men season at home to Melbourne Victory on October 21, said he was at peace with the fact his international career was over.

"I think that ship has sailed. You never know, if I go out and start the season by scoring 10 goals it would be hard not to pick me," the 32-year-old told AAP.

"I'm a realist, though, and there's a trend of young fellas at right back in Europe who are doing really well.

"That position was up in the air in the past but there's a good few going around that will be giving Arnie a bit of a headache.

"I don't think I'm in that conversation but I'd love to do it again, I'd never say no to representing my country."

Before the ALM season kicks off Grant is hellbent on helping Sydney claim their first piece of silverware since the 2020 title after they qualified for the Australia Cup final.

Football Australia have confirmed the Sky Blues will host Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Saturday October 7 due to renovations at Suncorp Stadium and a lack of suitable alternative venues in the Queensland capital.

After a trophy-free few years, Grant believes Steve Corica's men are starting to turn a corner, pointing to the Cup run and the fact they finished one win away from last year's ALM grand final as evidence.

"We've shown some promise in this Cup run and we've got a few new faces and a different philosophy," Grant said.

"It all seems to be coming together very well and we're only going to get better as the season goes on.

"Hopefully we win that Cup, get some silverware and push through and give it a good run this season and get back to where we believe Sydney FC should be."
