Soccer Saturday verdict on Newcastle's World Cup hopefuls after Aston Villa thrashing

Dan Burn and Callum Wilson will have both impressed Gareth Southgate with their performances as Newcastle United thrashed Aston Villa. That is the view of Soccer Saturday pundit Kris Boyd, with the England boss sat in the stands at St James' Park as the Magpies ran riot.

Wilson netted either side of the break to put Eddie Howe's side in control, before goals from Joelinton and in-form Miguel Almiron sealed a thumping 4-0 victory on Saturday. The Magpies dominated the second-half, and came close to extending their lead further, with Jacob Murphy and Wilson both seeing efforts come back off the woodwork.

Southgate will likely be finalising his decisions over the squad for next month's World Cup squad, and Wilson has made no secret of his desire to earn a call-up. Newcastle's number nine has now scored six goals in nine top-flight appearances, and pundit Kris Boyd praised the 30-year-old for proving he had 'absolutely everything' in the victory over Villa.

When asked if Southgate would have been impressed by Wilson's display, he told Soccer Saturday: "Very. I think that sometimes you look at strikers and you think what does he do? Does he just score goals?

"Can he hold the ball up? Does he want to run in behind? Is he willing to go chase down defenders and work hard for the team?

"He had everything today, absolutely everything. He was excellent from start to finish, and topped it off with two goals. He obviously gets the shot that Olsen saves for Joelinton's goal, and he slips in Almiron for his goal.

"He had a header where he absolutely bullied Tyrone Mings when Jacob Murphy hooked the ball in. He's aggressive, on the front foot and gets across Mings and bullets a header which comes crashing off the bar."

Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier helped the hosts record another clean sheet to preserve Newcastle's record of currently boasting the Premier League's best defence. Both earned call-ups to England's latest Nations League squad, and are expected to keep their places in Qatar.

Burn also played his part in the latest clean sheet, starting at left-back once again before partnering substitute Jamaal Lascelles in the heart of defence in the closing stages. The uncapped 30-year-old's form has seen him tipped as an outside contender to earn a World Cup spot, and Boyd believes the latest display highlights exactly what he would offer the Three Lions boss.

The former Scotland international said: "He played left back which just shows you...in big tournaments, you want versatility in the squad. Kieran Trippier was excellent on the right side so you have nothing to worry about there.

"Nick Pope had a couple of saves to make, you expect him to go as well. Dan Burn didn't do his chances any harm today, he went into centre-back as well.

"He's playing left side of a back four. Newcastle have conceded the least amount of goals in the Premier League, so he can defend in a back four.

"If Gareth wants to play three at the back, I'm sure Dan Burn could easily slide in there as well. He didn't do himself any harm today, that's for sure."
