SNP sex pest MP Patrick Grady faces no further police investigations

SNP MP Patrick Grady is facing no further police action into allegations of sexual harassment against a party staff member in Westminster.

The Glasgow North MP stood away from his SNP membership after the Met police opened an inquiry into the claims against him.

He was suspended from the House of Commons for two days and from the SNP Westminster group for a corresponding period of time when the Westminster authorities substantiated claims that he had sexually harassed a teenage staffer.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford was slammed by the victim for the way he handled the case and a leaked recording found the Skye and Lochaber MP had called for colleagues to give Grady “as much support as possible”.

Nicola Sturgeon said the SNP’s Westminster group had questions to answer over its handling of the harassment complaint against Grady she still had confidence in the under-fire Blackford.

With police inquiries over the door in now open for Grady to take up the SNP mantle in the Commons again where had served as chief whip under Blackford.

Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain said the SNP should block any move for Grady to rejoin the SNP group.

The North East Fife MP said: “Just because the police have said they will not be conducting a criminal investigation into Patrick Grady does not mean that what he did was ok. Ian Blackford has been exposed as a morale vacuum, more concerned with protecting his friends than ensuring a young staff member got justice."

She added: “The SNP have been forced into allowing allegations of sexual misconduct within the Conservative party to pass without comment because they know they have failed at dealing with their own complaints.

“Handling these types of allegations is something that all parties need to do better on. For the SNP, that should start with refusing to hand back the party whip to Patrick Grady and removing Ian Blackford from a position of leadership.”

The SNP has been approached for comment.
