SNP set to host National Council – but no announcement made

THE SNP are set to host members at a second National Council later this year with some members expressing concern at the lack of notification received from the party.

Details of the key policymaking body have been released online with no public announcement, leading to some members expressing surprise that the event had been confirmed.

The event will be held at Perth Concert Hall on Saturday, December 7.

At a council in early 2024, former first minister Humza Yousaf and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn addressed delegates.

The council has traditionally met in between the party’s conferences to discuss policy positions on a range of issues and act as a “bridge” between members and the leadership.

But when approached and asked whether they had received emails about the upcoming event, several members checked and confirmed none had come through despite deadlines for resolutions fast approaching.

The party HQ has no obligation to notify members, and it is understood conveners and secretaries of branches have been tasked with circulating the information.

One activist told The National: “This is a very common problem to be honest. I lost track of how many times I emailed the national secretary about this."

On the SNP website, the deadlines for members are as follows:

  • Deadline for resolutions: Monday, October 21
  • Publication of provisional agenda: Monday, October 28
  • Deadline for amendments: Monday, November 24
  • Publication of final agenda: Friday, November 29
  • National Council: Saturday, December 7

National Council was abolished in 2018 and reinstated in 2021 with the pledge that two would be held each year.
