MP for West Dunbartonshire Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed the announcement of Boris Johnson standing down as leader of the Tory party.
Local SNP MP Docherty-Hughes says that his constituents in West Dunbartonshire will ‘breathe a sigh of relief’ that Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minister appears to finally be at an end.
It comes after the Prime Minister made a statement outside Downing Street confirming that a Conservative party leadership election is set to take place, with Tory party members expected to decide on Johnson’s replacement.
The announcement came after more than 50 UK government ministers resigned their posts last week in an attempt to force the scandal-hit PM out of office.
MP Martin Docherty Hughes said: “Many in West Dunbartonshire will breathe a sigh of relief that Boris Johnson’s time as Prime Minister appears to finally be at an end.
“It’s taken the Conservative party three years to work out what voters in Scotland knew from day one – Boris Johnson isn’t fit for office.
“And in that time his dysfunctional government has inflicted on Scotland a damaging Brexit we didn’t vote for, the biggest cut to social security in 80 years, and a cost-of-living crisis that worsens by the day.
“Boris may be going, but the broken Westminster system that fails our communities time and time again remains.
“It’s only with the choice of independence that Scotland can escape these inadequate UK governments once and for all.”
