SNP members are set to debate abolishing the Scotland Office at their party conference next month.
The final agenda for the party's national conference, taking place in Aberdeen between October 15 and 17, was leaked on Friday afternoon.
It contains a motion which brands both the Scotland Office and the Scottish Secretary – currently Douglas Alexander – as "expensive anachronisms", with the office serving "no useful purpose today".
The motion, submitted by the Milngavie and Bearsden North SNP branch, states: "Conference notes that spending by the UK Government's Scotland Office has reached record levels in direct contrast to its diminishing role as powers are devolved to the Scottish Parliament.
It states: "Conference believes that the Scotland Office and the role of the Secretary of State for Scotland are now just expensive anachronisms from a time when there was no Scottish Parliament to make decisions on Scotland's behalf, and hence serves no useful purpose today.
"Conference resolves that the Scotland Office should be closed and the role of the Secretary of State for Scotland be abolished, with all monies saved diverted to the Scottish Parliament."
The Scotland Office has come under intense scrutiny amid questions over its role and effectiveness.
While the department had previously claimed responsibility for the removal of US tariffs on Scottish whisky earlier this year, it has since emerged that the Scotland Office had "no input" on the decision.
And last month, the SNP said Scotland Office staff were "running for the exit" after the department's annual report and accounts revealed it had paid out nearly £400,000 in severance payments.
The SNP's national conference has come under the media spotlight after the party's conference committee voted down a bid for debate on how to advance independence.
SNP members reacted to the independence motion which made it on to the final agenda, branding it the "weakest one imaginable".
The agenda – which can be read in full here – also calls for more powers over immigration and new anti-racism measures amid a rise in the far right.
The Scotland Office was approached for comment.
