AN SNP MSP has submitted a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
It comes after the Scottish Greens submitted their own motion on the matter while Alba announced it would be doing the same, though this has not appeared on the Scottish Parliament's website yet.
Kaukab Stewart has lodged a motion entitled "Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza and Israel" which calls on the UK Government to demand "an end to the deadly military action", adding there is "no justification for inflicting terror or killing innocent civilians".
It reads in full: "That the Parliament notes the calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel; further notes the condemnation of the loss of life in the most recent conflict, with around 1,400 people reportedly killed in a brutal terrorist attack in Israel on 7 October 2023 and more than 10,000 people reportedly killed in Gaza in the conflict since; deplores all violence in the region; notes the belief that fighting must stop in order to allow diplomatic discussions to take place that will safeguard innocent civilians; further notes the calls on the UK Government, including from communities in the Glasgow Kelvin constituency, to do its part in working with other UN nations to demand an end to deadly military action in Gaza and to bring to justice those responsible for the terror attacks suffered by Israel; believes strongly that there is no justification for inflicting terror or killing innocent civilians, and condemns violence in all its forms."
The motion differs slightly from the ones drawn up by the Greens and Alba which both explicitly call for the Parliament to support a ceasefire, as the Welsh Parliament has already done.
The Green motion has received cross-party support having been signed by several MSPs from the SNP, Labour and the Greens.
Stewart's motion has not yet achieved sufficient cross-party support but has been backed by Labour's Katy Clark, the Greens' Ross Greer and Maggie Chapman and the SNP's Kevin Stewart.
The Green motion reads: "That the Parliament supports the United Nations Secretary General's calls for a ceasefire in Gaza."
The Alba motion is set to read: "That the Parliament calls for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the killing of all innocents in the Middle East, believes that those from Hamas who have committed terrorist atrocities against Israelis should be prosecuted as criminals but that such terror does not justify a disproportionate and illegal military response by the government of Israel.
"Parliament calls on the UK Government to support an immediate ceasefire, justice for the Palestinian people and the provisioning and safe evacuation of Israeli hostages and civilians from a war zone."
The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign has urged people to write to their MSPs to back the motions, including a Labour one which focuses on arms sales to Israel.
On Instagram, the group said: "Let them know that their voice only counts when they make all efforts to make it public."
Clark's motion on arms sales to Israel calls on the Scottish Parliament to "express its disappointment that the UK Government has not suspended arms sales to Israel" and calls on the Scottish Goverment "to immediately suspend" the awarding of publicly-funded grants to arms companies who hold export licences to sell arms to Israel.
