Snow FOUR inches deep blankets Britain as flights cancelled and schools close across UK

Parts of the UK have woken up to several inches of snow this morning as the dramatic cold snap continues.

Dozens of schools across the country have announced closures while motorists on the M25 got stranded overnight as the motorway became blanketed.

The Met Office have issued yellow weather warnings for areas of the country impacted by snowfall, including the South East, West Midlands and the North East.

Motorists have been warned travel disruption and road closures are likely in some parts, while some have been urged not to drive at all unless absolutely necessary.

Police in Warwickshire issued a warning to drivers this morning urging them to wait until roads had been cleared after several inches of snow landed overnight.

"Until the roads are clearer, please ask yourself if your journey warrants putting yourself, your passengers and other road users at risk," the force said.

Meanwhile, all flights at Jersey and Stansted Airport were grounded after its only runway had to be cleared of snow, while Heathrow and Gatwick were also hit with numerous cancellations.

"Delays to flights were experienced earlier due to de-icing of aircraft which is a ground handler's responsibility and safety of aircraft and passengers is paramount," a spokesman for Stansted said.

"Passengers are advised to check with their airline for current status of their flights."

A number of train operators are also advising commuters that the lines could be hit with severe delays and cancellations this morning, including Thames Link and South Western.

South Eastern Railway advised passengers not to travel at all because of snow and ice on the electric rail.

"To allow Network Rail to check that the rails are clear of snow and ice, which can prevent trains from drawing power from the electric rail, the first trains in each direction on all routes will be cancelled," National Rail said.

"We also have many trains in the wrong location after last night's disruption, which will cause further cancellations to services across the network."

Drivers on the M25 were grounded to a halt last night due to sudden heavy snowfall, with images showing cars becoming stuck as the snow quickly settled.

The weather caused chaos with motorists sliding about, with the worst of the weather between junctions 23 and 28 around north London.

Other major roads affected include the M11, M2, A21, A27 and A249.

Weather warnings for snow and ice are to continue through this morning.

A Met Office spokesperson said the snow would cause travel disruption and even potentially result in powercuts.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected," a spokesperson said.
