It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Wales - and from midweek, you'll really start to feel it too. Bitterly cold temperatures have been forecast across the country from Wednesday onwards - with temperatures plummeting to freezing and below.
And there's even snow forecast for low ground in certain areas as minus degree temperatures will force the country to get the winter coats, hats and gloves out of the wardrobe. Communities in some parts of mid-Wales are bracing themselves for lows of -3° in the early hours of Thursday morning, and according to Met Office weather forecasts, there's even some snowfall anticipated overnight in some areas. With temperatures low in many areas, they may not be alone. A forecast for Wales from Monday to Wednesday reads: "Staying cold next week. Showers are possible at times, perhaps wintry over higher ground, but many places staying largely dry. Occasional sunny spells, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight frosts."
And a long-range weather forecast for the UK from Wednesday, December 7, to Friday, December 16, reads: "There is reasonable confidence that temperatures will remain below average, and it looks like turning even colder from Wednesday. Showers will fall increasingly as snow in the north, even to lower levels at times with notable accumulations over the Scottish mountains.
"There is a low risk in the far southwest, of a more prolonged spell of rain, which would turn to snow over the moors, but this is far from certain. The best of the clear or sunny spells looks most likely in the west, though this could lead to some hard night frosts. Towards mid-month, the signal for below average temperatures weakens with hints of milder, wetter conditions pushing in from the southwest - though any such features could be preceded by a period of hill snow."
