Scots woke up to snow on Thursday morning as the Met Office extended a yellow weather warning.
A flurry of the white stuff fell across Northern and Eastern parts of the country with more predicted tonight as temperatures continue to drop.
The Met Office has issued the weather warning for snow and ice across most parts of Scotland, including the Highlands, Grampian, Tayside and Fife, Strathclyde and Orkney and Shetland. The warning will last until 12pm tomorrow, Friday, December 9.
A further yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Grampian, Highlands, Tayside and Fife will remain in place through to Sunday, December 11. Temperatures are expected to fall to as low as -10C in some areas this week.
Gritters were out in force as councils battled to keep roads open in the worst affected areas. Traffic Scotland reported a number of roads were closed due to the snowfall.
The Highlands and Aberdeenshire were hit hardest by the Arctic freeze, with residents in Largue, Aberdeenshire, even reporting lightning.
In Perthshire the A93 from Glenshee to Braemer was closed and in Moray the A939 from Tomintoul was also shut down.
Pictures taken on Thursday morning show a dog walker wearing a full snow suit as she attempts to wade through the white stuff. Another picture shows a family sledging through the heavy snowfall.
Numerous cars and vans had to be rescued after becoming stuck in snow in the early hours of this morning on the A96 Fochabers to Keith.
Two buses also collided in the snow in Scotstown Road in the Bridge of Don this morning as drivers struggled to cope with the ice on the roads.
In Edinburgh, locals also woke up to a thin layer of snow but traffic was not affected.
A Met Office spokesperson warned: "Showers will fall as snow to low levels at times.
"Accumulations of 2-5 cm are possible at lower levels, with 10-15 cm above 200 metres.
"Some drifting and blizzard conditions are likely in the strong northerly winds. In addition, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, mainly where some of the showers fall as rain or sleet on some coasts."
