Snow alert with Met Office weather warnings for ice and wintry showers in big freeze

A weather warning for snow and ice across parts of the UK has just been issued by the Met Office.

The yellow alert is in place from 6pm this evening until 10am tomorrow and is likely to affect roads as many people head home from their Christmas breaks.

Icy patches are expected on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, which the Met Office warns could lead to a greater chance of injuries or accidents.

They added that patchy snow on higher routes, both from wintry showers this evening, and also on rain early on Tuesday, could make for "somewhat difficult driving conditions".

A Met office forecaster said: "Wintry showers will continue through this evening but as skies clear, patchy ice is expected to develop on some untreated surfaces.

"Cloud and rain will arrive from the west through Tuesday morning with temperatures starting to rise.

"Any snow will be reserved for higher ground with patchy and temporary accumulations of 1-2 cm above around 300 to 400 metres."
