Snoop Dogg trying to pronounce director’s name at Golden Globes nominations has people in stitches

Rapper Snoop Dogg helped to announce the nominees for the 2022 Golden Globes - and people on social media couldn’t stop talking about his pronunciation of Dune director Denis Villeneuve.

On Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) released the shortlist of television shows and movies that will be in the running at the annual event and drafted in the star to help out.

As Snoop was reading out the nominations for Best Director, he pronounced Denis Villenueve’s surname as Vil-la-no-eva instead of Vee-nurve.

This gave it a slight Latin feel rather than the typical French-Canadian vibe.

“Congratulations to Denis Villeneuve, @HansZimmer and #DuneMovie for their Golden Globes nominations for Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Motion Picture Drama. I don’t think Snoop Dogg has said ‘Villeneuve’ out loud before, though!” wrote one Dune fan account.

“The way Snoop Dog pronounced ‘Denis Villeneuve’ is ARTPOP,” another added.

A third wrote: “Snoop Dogg mispronouncing Denis Villeneuve is now my fav way to say his name.”

Check out some other reactions below.

Belfast and The Power of the Dog led the nominations in movie categories, both with a total of seven. Succession led TV with five.

Squid Game received two nominations for Lee Jung-jae for Best Actor and one for Best Drama series.

The 2022 awards won’t be televised this year.

This decision came after NBC mentioned back in May that it wouldn’t showcase the awards show over outrage incited from a Los Angeles Times report that said there were no Black members within the HFPA.

The HFPA is made up of 87 international journalists who determine the nominees and winners of the Golden Globes each year.

Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson were among several stars who spoke out against the HFPA. Cruise even returned all three of his Golden Globes awards.

On Sunday, January 9, the winners will be announced. It is still unclear as to what the ceremony will be like and where it will air, given ongoing Covid concerns.
