Sneak peek inside the UK's biggest Poundland opening in Nottingham

A super-sized Poundland selling everything from clothing to food and toys to DIY will officially open in Nottingham tomorrow (Saturday, February 12).

The new store - the biggest in the UK - features the largest selection of Pep&Co clothing, more health and beauty and homewares than ever before, and it celebrates a number of firsts for the chain.

When Nottinghamshire Live was given a sneak peek a day before the grand opening, shoppers at Riverside Retail Park were already chomping at the bit to have a look around.

The 15,000ft of retail space at the former Outfit fashion shop, has aisles of cosmetics, pet food, crafts, luggage, books, reading glasses, gonks - you name it, it's probably there.

It's the first time Poundland has stocked small domestic appliances, with Russell Hobbs' electric hand mixers, irons and, toasters and kettles on sale.

In another first the shop has a range of cosmetics from Rimmel, cuddly toys from Ty and bags of fresh fruit and vegetables including apples and potatoes.

Pep&Co's women's, men's and childrenswear - one of the country's fastest growing clothing retailers - is a third bigger than in any other store.

Tom Hill, head of transformation, said: "This shop is about giving it a real platform for the first time - we've never laid it out like this before. It's really taken off. You can get essentials from a fiver. We're really proud of this."

There's 5,100 different products in the shop - with around 92 per cent for under a fiver and many items still selling for a pound. The most expensive is an on-trend egg chair priced at £150.

Poundland's own brand Vido electricals include headphones, alarm clocks, fitness trackers, gaming mats and for an unbeatable £15, a smart watch.

Mr Hill said: "We have elevated the brand from a perspective you can now get value at different price points, not just one or two pounds.

"We can now offer value on really big brands. We have really tried to create a brilliant customer environment that showcases all of our products in the best possible way."

A large food and drink section starts with food-to-go and takeaway coffee by the entrance and a sizeable space in store dedicated to chilled and frozen items - including tubs of Haagen-Dazs ice cream for £2.50.

It's just one of five stores across the UK to sell alcohol.

The store is big on seasonal items so there's plenty of tempting ways to splash the cash on items for the garden, Easter eggs and Mother's Day gifts.

It's also the first store to sell a bespoke range of tote bags, costing £1.50, highlighting Nottingham landmarks.

Maria Epaminondas, Pep&Co's head of buying and design, said: "The store looks amazing but we're still making sure that our prices remain the same.

"Ninety percent of our range is £10 and under. This is our new spring range so pastels, key fashion trends, key colours of the season.

"We have amazing nightwear and have grown our nightwear licence offer so we work with Disney now and these designs are exclusive to us."

The store will be officially opened at 9am on Saturday, February 12, by two of the tallest players from Nottingham Basketball Club, 7ft tall Morakinyo Williams and 6ft 2-inch Kyle Jimenez.

While everything is bigger and better, there's one new feature that will appeal to the smallest shoppers - a range of child-sized trolleys.

Barry Williams, Poundland managing director, said: “Nottingham Riverside sets a new standard for Poundland.

"It’s our biggest and best store yet and it means we can offer a wider range than ever before, from longstanding Poundland favourites to new items that our customers are going to love.

"Our colleagues have worked flat out to get this superb store ready."
