Snake Pass is known for being one of the most scenic drives in the UK. But the twists and turns which make it so spectacular have earned it a place on a list of the most dangerous roads in the world.
The 26-mile route stretches from Glossop to Sheffield, crossing the Peak District. It’s a challenging drive with “blind summits and difficult bends.”
According to research conducted by car rental comparison website StressFreeCarRental.com, Snake Pass is among the most dangerous roads in the world, ranking seventh on the list. It described the road as a “hotspot for fatal accidents” and “notoriously hazardous”.

The road even has to close for an average of 70 days a year due to harsh weather conditions which make it even more dangerous. Snake Pass isn’t the only road in the UK to make it on the list, though, as Bealach-na-ba road in the Applecross peninsula in Scotland ranked in ninth place.
Skippers Canyon Road in New Zealand, a 16.5 mile route carved out by miners in 1890, was number one on the list thanks to its twisting hairpin turns and high elevation. El Caracol, which connects Argentina and Chile in the Andean mountains, came in second while North Yungas Road in Bolivia, known locally as the “route of death” was listed third.
A spokesperson for StressFreeCarRental.com said: “Drivers are urged to proceed with extreme caution while attempting to tackle any of the most dangerous roads in the world.
“Whether someone is an exceptionally experienced driver or overconfident, is it not worth taking any chances.
“Motorists should always drive with caution and follow extra safety measures such as slowing down and being extra observant when navigating these roads. But really you should avoid these dangerous roads altogether.
“One wrong move on these roads will end in almost certain death for drivers.”
