JAIPUR: Seamer Tushar Deshpande did the star turn for Mumbai as they sneaked a three-run victory against Baroda in a Group 'A' match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the SMS Stadium here on Thursday. He recorded figures of 4-0-20-3.
Chasing 143, captain Krunal Pandya (62 off 50 balls) along with Shivalik Sharma (30 off 17 balls) resurrected Baroda's innings with a 58-run partnership, and it almost looked like the duo would take their team through.
But the tables suddenly turned in the 19th over bowled by Deshpande, when on the last delivery, Krunal holed out to Shams Mulani. Seamer Mohit Avasthi followed it up with Shivalik's wicket on the first delivery of the last over.
With the dangerous duo back in the hut, the two new batters, Ninad Rathva (3 not out off 2 balls) and Karthik Kakde (3 not out off 3 balls), failed to gather 12 from the remaining 5 balls.
This is Mumbai's third win on the trot and are currently at the top of the table in their group with 12 points. Earlier, made to bat first, Mumbai struggled. Except for Yashasvi Jaiswal (38 off 33 balls) and Shivam Dube (35 off 30 balls), other batters disappointed.
Brief Scores: Mumbai 142-8 in 20 overs (Y Jaiswal 38, S Dube 35; A Seth 3-31, A Rajput 2-21) bt Baroda 139-8 in 20 overs (K Pandya 62, S Sharma 30; T Deshpande 3-20, S Mulani 2-27)
In a high-scoring close encounter, Shubham Dubey and Akshay Karnewar held their nerves to enable Vidarbha beat Rajasthan by six wickets in a Group A match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match in Mohali on Thursday.
With 21 runs needed in the last two overs, Dhuru Shorey struck a maximum to bring down the equation to 190/3 in 19.5 overs, but was clean bowled on the last delivery of the Khaleel Ahmed over. Karnewar then joined Dubey and finished the match with a six.
This is Vidarbha's second win in two games while Rajasthan is yet to open their account.
Earlier, made to bat first, it was the middle-order special from captain Deepak Hooda and rookie Kunal Singh Rathore that helped Rajasthan notch 200/6. But on a flat track and in front of aggressive batting by Vidarbha, it appeared that Rajasthan fell 10-15 runs short.
Meanwhile, Haryana, Hyderabad, Mizoram registered wins in Group A matches being played in Jaipur. Himanshu Rana-led Haryana thumped J&K by 73 runs to bring their first win in three games. Opener Ankit Kumar struck unbeaten 89 off 63 balls while middle-order batter Rohit Sharma chipped in with 28-ball 47 not out as J&K's fierce pace battery was made to look rather pedestrian on the day as Haryana posted 178/3. In reply, J&K batters imploded and were bowled out for 105 with two overs and three balls to spare.
Hyderabad registered a six-wicket win against Chhattisgarh with 24 balls to spare while Mumbai defeated Baroda by three runs. On the other hand, Mizoram defeated Meghalaya by 20 runs.
