John Russell has backed Frank Liivak to bring ‘a lot of quality’ to Sligo Rovers after the club swooped for the Estonian international.
New Bit O’Red boss Russell completed a deal for the attacking midfielder today and he arrives from Levadia Tallinn.
Liivak will join the Rovers squad in the coming days and could make his debut in the home against Shelbourne on Saturday week.
Liivak has won 24 senior caps for Estonia since his debut in 2014, the most recent of which came in the Nations League in late 2020.
The 25-year-old started in both legs of Levadia’s 4-3 aggregate defeat to Dundalk in last summer’s Europa Conference League second qualifying round tie.
Liivak is Russell’s first signing since succeeding Liam Buckley and the Sligo Rovers boss said: “Frank will bring a lot of quality and experience to our group.
“He has played in some big games for his country and has won numerous honours during his time in the Estonian League.
“He’s an exciting player who can operate in a few positions. He comes to us at a really good stage of his career.
“I know from my conversations with him that he is excited by this new challenge and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
Levadia are in the middle of their season and Liivak arrives having made 17 appearances in the Estonian top flight in this campaign.
Russell added: “I want to attract top players to Sligo Rovers, and I think the fans will enjoy watching Frank.”
Liivak will be available for Sligo Rovers’ European tie with Welsh side Bala Town after sitting out Levadia’s clash with Icelandic team Vikingur Reykjavik on Tuesday night.
‘’I’m really excited to become a part of the Sligo Rovers family,” said Liivak.
“I’m looking forward to making my first steps in front of the fans in The Showgrounds and help the team to achieve great things.’’
