SleepSoul Wish 3000 Series Pocket Cool Gel Mattress review: a medium firm hybrid with cooling properties for hot and restless sleepers

SleepSoul Wish 3000 Series Pocket Cool Gel Mattress.

When I was asked to write this SleepSoul Wish 3000 Series Pocket Cool Gel Mattress review, I instantly reached for my pjs. As a lifestyle journalist who specialises in sleep tech, I’m always keen to source the best mattresses and I was instantly enticed by the SleepSoul’s excellent value and generous individual pocket spring count. There is, in fact, a generous 3,000 springs in the king size version, and 2,565 in the double, and teamed with its reinforced edge design and cool get memory foam filling, I think this is a great-value buy.

I trialed the mattress for a month to rate its performance, design, temperature regulation, motion isolation and edge support. Read on to find out more about this hybrid mattress that comes rolled up and vacuum packed for swift delivery and convenient set up.

SLEEPSOUL WISH 3000 SERIES POCKET COOL GEL MATTRESS REVIEW: DESIGN AND SETUP

The SleepSoul Wish 3000 Series Pocket Cool Gel Mattress is a medium-firm hybrid mattress that comes in a wide selection of sizes. Its USP is that it features a layer of cooling gel memory foam that is perfect for regulating body temperature as you sleep. The mattress includes a very generous number of pocket springs to offer excellent support from edge to edge. There are, in fact, 3,000 pocket springs in the king size mattress and 2,565 in the double. There’s also a super-soft pillow-top layer designed to provide extra cushioning.

Delivery was swift and the mattress arrived rolled up and vacuum packed, so it could be conveniently taken out of its box and carried up the stairs and onto my bedframe. I ordered a double size and as it feels quite solid in its roll, it was a two-person job to carry it up the stairs and unravel it, however.

Once I’d sliced open the plastic packaging, it quickly began to take shape. I’ve tested a wide range of mattresses, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that takes form quite as quickly as the SleepSoul Wish 3000 Series. Within minutes it had puffed up to its plush thickness and its non-slip base kept it in place on the bedframe. The instructions say that it should be ready to sleep on in about two hours, but 48 hours is recommended for it to arrive at its full 30cm depth. It’s a plush depth too and, unlike some rolled-up mattresses I’ve tried that can feel rather flimsy at the edges, the firm edge support here is impressive.

While there aren’t any handles to rotate this mattress – and this should be done regularly for best results – the mattress doesn’t need to be flipped over which is convenient. What impressed me most about set up was how little off-gassing there was to contend with after opening it up, which is that new factory smell you can sometimes get with a new vacuum-packed mattress.

SLEEPSOUL WISH 3000 SERIES POCKET COOL GEL MATTRESS REVIEW: PERFORMANCE

I slept on a double size of the SleepSoul Wish 300 Series Pocket Gel Mattress on a wooden slatted bed frame for a month alongside my partner. I was keen to see just how well rested it made us both feel in the morning. I was keen to see how comfortable it was for sleeping on the side, back and front, whether it limited motion transfer from side to side and how well the edges and corners held together.

Cooling gel for a cool and breathable mattress

As a hot sleeper I was pleased to hear that the mattress has memory foam infused with cooling gel microbeads. This not only helps to regulate temperature but also improves breathability, which is particularly important when memory foam is involved.

Eager to see if this mattress could keep me feeling cool and comfortable throughout the night, I dressed the mattress and my duvet with breathable cotton bed linen to complement the set up. The results were satisfying, and I never got too hot sleeping on this mattress. It even stayed comfortably cool on hotter summer nights when the room temperature reached 28 degrees.

Firm and great for bad backs

Inside the double version of this mattress there are 2,565 pocket springs – the king size has 3,000. This helps provide firm and even support throughout and helped to ensure good pressure relief where it was needed the most. It felt great on my lower back and I was able to spread out while feeling evenly supported. While it’s very firm, the mattress still has a nice bit of bounce to it.

I measured the sinkage of this mattress using an 8kg weight and measured it at around 2.5 inches. The weight didn’t dip into the mattress too much and provided good bounce back, which illustrates the good pressure relief here.

As someone who is used to sleeping on a medium-firm mattress, it took me a week or so to get used to just how firm the mattress felt. That said, from night one I appreciated just how balanced the firmer tension made my body feel. My partner, who at 6ft is much taller than me, prefers a firm mattress and noted just how good he thought the pressure relief was here too. He liked how evenly supported he felt and said that he found it easy to move from his side to front without that feeling of getting stuck like you can sometimes get with a foam mattress. The motion isolation technology is great here too and both myself and partner were able to sleep soundly without noticing each other move in our sleep.

I also tested this with a wine glass and 3kg weight to see if the glass toppled when the weight was dropped from a 20cm height and 4 inches away. The glass wobbled but didn’t fall, which proves just how good the motion transfer technology is here.

Finally a mattress with excellent edge support

What I found instantly impressive about this mattress is just how well the sides hold together. It does, in fact, have a reinforced edge design and this makes a big difference when getting in and out of bed or sitting on the sides of the mattress. This also gives you much more usable sleep space in which to spread out and snooze.

To gain some sort of measurement to illustrate just how good the edge support is I placed an 8kg weight on the side of the bed. It remained in place and didn’t topple off the edge, which is testament to how good the edge support is here.

SLEEPSOUL WISH 3000 SERIES POCKET COOL GEL MATTRESS REVIEW: VERDICT

If you’re looking for a great-value bed-in-a-box mattress that won’t make you too hot as you sleep and has an excellent quality firm feel, this mattress is one to consider. It has great edge support, which not only gave me maximum room on which to sleep but made it easy for me to get into bed and stopped me sliding out of bed in the morning. Its generous 2,500+ individual pocket springs give the mattress a nice squish on the top, while offering good support. I found it easy to move from my side to my back and find a comfortable position.

Its layer of cool gel infused memory foam did well to keep me feeling cushioned and maintained my body temperature at night too. My partner slept well on the mattress too, and – due to the excellent motion transfer technology here - he was surprised at just how undisturbed he went at night and vice versa.

While the company states that this is a medium-firm hybrid design, I felt that it was much firmer than your average medium-firm mattress. Overall, I recommend this a mattress to consider if you’re looking for a firm hybrid that is breathable and well structured.

SLEEPSOUL WISH 3000 SERIES POCKET COOL GEL MATTRESS REVIEW:  ALTERNATIVES TO CONSIDER

The Simba Hybrid Pro is another excellent hybrid option, this mattress comes with a similarly thick 28cm depth. It has a very generous 4,800 springs and costs rather more – at the time of writing it is £1,149 for a double, for example. Simba rates it as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so it is rather softer than the SleepSoul Wish 3000 mattress too.

The Emma NextGen Premium Mattress is another excellent hybrid option comes from the popular bed-in-a-box brand Emma. This mattress has a 25cm depth and offers medium firm and comfortable support. It does a great job at regulating temperature too, so you won’t get too hot as you sleep. At the time of writing it costs £475.30 for a double.
