Sleep expert warns of curtain mistake that could be keeping you hotter at night

While it's pleasant to enjoy during the day, the hot weather can be a pain at night - especially as you're trying to get a good night's sleep. No matter how many methods you may try to keep cool, you'll often find yourself restlessly tossing and turning as you struggle to drift off to sleep.

However, a sleep expert has revealed that being hot at night could be caused by a vital mistake you're making as soon as you get out of bed in the morning, reports the Mirror. Finally shining a light on ways to achieve peaceful rest in a cool bedroom, Nic Shacklock from Online-Bedrooms .co.uk shared a hack to get you through the night comfortably.

He explained: "We're not used to having to sleep in hot weather here in the UK. Our houses are super insulated and not many of us will have built-in air conditioning in our homes which means that when we do get warm weather, it can often be a struggle to sleep.

"There are also quick fixes you can do at night to help you cool while you sleep like putting ice in front of your fan or sleeping in cold socks."

Along with making your bed in the morning, it's second nature to open your curtains and blinds to let the natural light into your home. However, Nic has warned that you could be setting yourself up for failure at night.

The expert advises people to keep their curtains and blinds closed as allowing the sunlight to beam through the windows is one of the main factors in heating the room up. This heat remains in the room well into the night, long after the sun goes down.

By keeping your windows and blinds closed, you can pride yourself on having a cooler room as you go to sleep. The option of having curtains or blinds shut, as well as having your windows open or closed, has been a common debate for years.

Many people struggling in the heatwave swear by keeping their windows closed with their curtains or blinds shut, as this helps to keep the rays out of your home. It's vital that you keep your windows and curtains closed during the day, but having your windows open in the evening when the sun has set can create airflow.

Taking to popular social media app Twitter, one user said: "I have to keep reminding the house that right now it is cooler inside than outside so keep the windows closed. It feels colder outside because of the breeze, but that is a lie."
