Slattery’s releases ‘Madchester’ Easter egg inspired by the Haçienda and Oasis

Walking into any supermarket at this time of year, you won’t have much difficulty finding stacks upon stacks of Easter eggs lining up the aisles. But, if you’re after something that's much more unique and special than what the supermarkets have to offer, you won’t have to look much further than in Bury.

Manchester chocolatiers Slattery’s, based in Whitefield, are selling a ‘Madchester’ egg that takes inspiration from Manchester’s thriving music scene and will only be available to buy from their shop on Bury New Road.

The milk chocolate egg is filled with chocolate buttons and is decorated with edible novelty items paying homage to Manchester music, including a smiley face in Haçienda colours and iconic Manchester nightclub logos, such as 42s, and is also topped with a sugar bucket hat in homage to the Stone Roses.

The £21 egg also features a chocolate Manchester bee, guitar and music notes while customers will also get to pick an iconic edible Manchester album cover, such as Oasis’ What’s The Story, Morning Glory?, to include on the front as well.

Laura Slattery-Vickers, general manager at Slattery's, said the idea for the 6-inch egg came about after more customers started to ask for novelty easter gifts that appeal to adults as well as children.

“Every year we make a range of novelty Easter eggs,” Laura explains to the M.E.N. “In the past we have been asked for ones that appeal to adults more than just children.

“We already make a wide range of Manchester-inspired chocolates all year round and they are always very popular so we decided to create a Manchester music egg as we thought it would appeal to a lot of people and complement our other Manchester chocolates.

“As a Manchester company, we are pleased to create an egg that celebrates the music that the vast majority of our staff love and enjoy, as well as evoking happy memories of good times for our customers.”

Due to the detailed design, Laura said the special eggs can only be bought from Slattery’s shop and can’t be delivered to people’s homes in the mail. It also means they can focus more on making sure each elements of the eggs are perfectly made.

“They are not available through our website and are not suitable to be sent out on courier or in the post as they are too fragile,” she explains.

“The eggs are made in batches and in stages and different elements are made in different departments, but for one person to make a batch of 18 of these eggs from start to finish, it would take around five hours.”

The eggs are £21 each and are only available to buy or collect in store. Customers can place an order over the phone alongside a £5 deposit.

Slattery’s is on 197 Bury New Rd, Whitefield, M45 6GE. Phone number: 0161 767 9303.
