A Sky customer has explained how he saved himself almost £600 on his bill with a simple trick. Sam Cooper says he uses the 15-minute hack every 18 months to slash the price of his TV and broadband subscription.
Sam said he used the trick recently when his contract came up for renewal. Writing for HullLive, Sam said: "I have been a Sky customer for six years now and knew my contract was about to come to an end. For us loyal customers, sadly, that usually means one thing - a huge price increase.
"My contract price was £76.50, which included the full Sky Q TV package, including multiroom, and Sky's Superfast Broadband. When I checked my future bills, this was due to jump to a truly eyewatering £109.50 once the contract came to an end and all of the marvellous offers loaded onto the account came to an end.
"It is something I am well aware of and prepared for at the end of each 18-month contract."
Sam, said the latest email told him his offers would continue and he 'wouldn't need to do a thing'. But the projection of future bills showed a monthly increase that would add up to almost £600 over the next 18 months.
Sam says that over the six years of being a customer with Sky he contacts them regularly when the renewal date comes up. He said: "I went through to the cancellation department, and explained, just like I do every 18 months, I wanted to leave due to new customers getting better offers.
"I was then thanked for my 'loyalty' and asked where I had seen the new customer offers. I explained on the Sky website - make sure you log out of your My Sky account so you can see them.
"The agent asked for some time to look at my account. He then not only matched the new customer price, he beat it and saved me what would have been a £33 a month increase.
"A 15-minute phone call has saved me £594 over the duration of the new 18-month contract. Sky certainly isn't alone with the offers expiring at the end of a contract. Insurance companies are also in the same boat and while there is nothing legally wrong with it, I am fortunate to be wise to it and willing to invest 15 minutes of my day yet again in another 18 months."
