The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at wide receiver, running back, cornerback and both interior and edge pass rusher.

The Vikings are slated to have four picks before compensatory selections are awarded and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths

Oklahoma’s wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (17) runs with the ball against Texas Tech, Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022, Jones AT&T Stadium.

The first thing that jumped out to me about Mims was his ability to separate. Yes, Mims is fast and has an athletic advantage over just about everyone on the field, but he doesn’t just use that to get open. He gets how to win with manipulation at the top of the route. The jab step he uses to avoid contact paired with his athleticism is perfect.

In the open field, Mims has good vision and the quickness to elude defenders. What makes him special is his speed. He can get away from defenders in a pinch.

As a blocker, Mims gives maximum effort. He’s feisty and aggressive when he engages with the defender. His hands are good and it shows with only 8 drops in 177 targets (4.51%).

Weaknesses

Nov 12, 2022; Morgantown, West Virginia, USA; Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (17) attempts to jump over and collides with West Virginia Mountaineers safety Hershey McLaurin (13) during the third quarter at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. Size is of real concern with Mims. He looks every bit of 5’10” and 177 lbs. In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he comes in smaller than that. Because of that, he is inconsistent with physicality. It’s easy to knock him off of his route and he can get overpowered when blocking.

Mims doesn’t have a diverse route tree and press coverage at the next level could give him real issues. He might be limited to being a slot only at the next level.

Tracking 8.2/10
Body Control 8.1/10
YAC Ability 8.3/10

There are going to need to be questions answered about Mims come the combine. He needs to have good measurables and test really well. Without those elements, he will just be another small receiver. His ability to stretch the field is something that can help the Vikings, but his overall effectiveness could be limited.
