Born in Anhui, China, Zhang began playing badminton at a young age. Recognizing her immense talent, she was soon accepted into the prestigious Chinese national training program. Under their rigorous training regimen, she honed her skills and developed an unmatched work ethic. However, as Zhang grew older, she realized that she wanted more than just success on the court. She yearned for personal fulfillment and freedom of choice. And so, at the age of 16, she made the difficult decision to leave China and pursue her dreams in the United States.
