Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey to be out ‘at least a couple more weeks,’ Doc Rivers says

PHILADELPHIA — Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that 76ers shooting guard Tyrese Maxey will miss at least a couple more weeks with a fractured left foot.

Maxey has been sidelined since suffering the injury on Nov. 18. He was originally expected to miss three to four weeks.

“Whatever he has to do, he’s nowhere near it,” Rivers said after practice. “So I would say he’s out at least, I don’t know, for at least a couple more weeks.”

Rivers said Tuesday that he hoped to see Maxey practice later in the week.

Asked what Maxey was able to do, Rivers responded, “Nothing is the answer. I mean, he can shoot. He can run a straight line, but that’s it.”

Friday’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors at the Wells Fargo Center will mark the 13th straight game Maxey has missed.

The 22-year-old has averaged 22.9 points, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 steal in 15 games.

Maxey suffered the fracture when he stepped on the foot of Milwaukee Bucks point guard Jevon Carter while driving to the basket shortly before halftime. The third-year veteran went to the locker room after splitting a pair of foul shots and did not return.

“He can sprint straight; he just can’t cut or he can’t stop,” Rivers said Thursday. “So it may get better in three days or five or six days. But I don’t see that happening.

“This is an uneducated guess, but I just can’t imagine him playing any time soon.”

In other injury news, De’Anthony Melton participated in Thursday’s light practice after missing Tuesday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings with lower-back stiffness. The combination guard is still listed as questionable to play against the Warriors (14-15).

Swingman Danuel House Jr. practiced and participated in shooting drills after missing the last three games with a left foot laceration. Guard Furkan Korkmaz was sent home from practice with a cold.
