Six Premier League VAR errors revealed with Arsenal and West Ham among unfortunate sides

Six VAR calls made in the Premier League this season have now been deemed to be incorrect.

All of the 48 overturned decisions so far this campaign have been assessed by an independent panel, made up of a mixture of former players and representatives from the Premier League and PGMOL.

The panel reported that six of those interventions were mistakes, according to ESPN, including Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed strike at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian thought he had put Arsenal in front early in the first-half against Manchester United, but it was chalked off after a VAR review ruled that Martin Odegaard fouled Christian Eriksen in the build-up.

West Ham can also feel hard done by, with David Moyes’ missing out on a point at Stamford Bridge as a result of a decision the panel viewed as incorrect.

Maxwel Cornet had seemingly netted a last-gasp equaliser against Chelsea, after Edouard Mendy palmed the ball out into his path. However, VAR swiftly halted the celebrations in the away end, believing the goalkeeper was fouled by Jarrod Bowen.

“You have seen it, it is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees - it doesn’t say much about whoever sent him over from VAR as well - it is an unbelievable decision against us,” Moyes said of the call after the match.

Other incorrect decisions include Dean Henderson giving away penalty when Nottingham Forest faced Brentford, and Douglas Luiz being sent off for violent conduct against Aston Villa.

The other two both involved Crystal Palace, with the Eagles fortunate in one instance and unlucky in the other.

Patrick Vieira’s side should not have been given a penalty for a Lucas Digne handball when they played Aston Villa, but had one go their way against Newcastle when Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal was ruled out for a foul Joe Willock.
