Six people shot outside funeral as terrified mourners run into church to escape gunfire

At least six people have been shot outside a funeral service as mourners rushed to hide inside the church.

Cops were called to Destiny of Faith Church in Pittsburgh following reports of multiple shootings in the Brighton Heights neighbourhood at around 12.20pm on Friday.

Police confirmed six people were injured and four remain in a stable condition with one victim said to be in a critical condition.

The funeral was being held for a victim of another shooting earlier this month in the neighbourhood.

Footage taken inside the funeral shows mourners screaming in fear as gunshots were fired outside multiple times.

Pittsburg Police said on Twitter : "Multiple shots fired in the area of 3700 block of Brighton Road.

"There are an unknown number of victims at this time. This is a very active scene. Please avoid the area."

The statement was issued after a “major police presence outside of the Destiny of Faith Church at the intersection of Benton Avenue and Brighton Road” was spotted outside the church.

The gunman did not enter the church as mourners fled for their safety (WPXI)

One eyewitness, who was in the church, told WPXI she believes gun violence in Pittsburgh is out of hand and communities need to come together to help fix it.

She said: “Nothing is sacred that you would come and shoot it up. It’s senseless you’d come around a church and shoot it up."

According to reports mourners heard between 40-50 shots as they hid inside the church.

Police confirmed an investigation is underway and said the shooter did not enter the building.

The recent shooting comes just days after three people were injured in a late night shooting in Pittsburgh.

Gunfire was heard just before midnight at a block of flats along Rhine Place last night.

One man was shot in the neck and taken to hospital in a critical condition whilst two women were shot.

Police confirmed one woman was shot in the leg and another in the arm as emergency services were called to the scene.

Both are said to be in a stable condition and were taken to hospital.

Cops confirmed they are still investigating the shooting and have not revealed the suspects or motives behind the attack.

On Wednesday afternoon, a teen was shot in the head in Pittsburgh after police were called to Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighbourhood.

Emergency services were called to to the 1700 block of Broadway Avenue around 4:21 p.m following the shooting.

However, Clayton Tierney ,17, was tragically pronounced dead on Wednesday evening at 11.37pm after he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital emergency department in a serious condition.

Office of the Allegheny County Medical Examiner confirmed they are investigating the death.
