Six people arrested after armed police in 'standoff' on street

Six people have been arrested on suspicion of firearm offences after a police incident.

Merseyside Police attended Enid Street, Toxteth, on Wednesday evening. Armed police were spotted at the scene and a large cordon was in place along Windsor Road and Enid Street.

People living in the area said they saw a man "waving a gun around in the street" and "threatening people". Others told the ECHO there had been an armed standoff involving police.

A picture shared with the ECHO shows an armed officer leaning on a police vehicle at the scene on Enid Street, appearing to point a weapon at someone.

A number of people gathered around the cordon, which at its largest stretched along Windsor Road from the junction with Dombey Street to the junction with Elaine Street, as police worked at the scene. Officers told people living within the cordon to keep their children indoors. Additionally, people working in shops on Windsor Road were told to stay in their premises.

The cordon was reduced at around 9.15pm, when it was restricted to a property on Enid Street. Last night, Merseyside Police said they had arrested two men and two women as part of an ongoing investigation.

Today, a spokesperson said six people are in custody on suspicion of firearm offences.

A 50-year-old man, a 34 year-old woman, a 51 year-old man, a 58 year-old man, a 45 year-old woman and a 57 year-old woman were all arrested yesterday on suspicion of possession of a firearm. All six currently remain in custody.

Police also confirmed a search was carried out at a property on Enid Street. Nothing was recovered and the search has now concluded. However, enquiries remain ongoing.
