Six of the best Glasgow urban explorer videos we've seen so far

The urban exploration phenomenon has taken the internet by storm in recent years, with adventurous amateur filmmakers from across the UK giving us a fascinating peek inside Glasgow's derelict landmarks.

While the practice is dangerous and, in many cases, against the law, urban explorers have taken us into all manner of crumbling sites, from creepy disused and abandoned asylums, hospitals, schools, police stations, factories and even zoos.

We at Glasgow Live have reported on numerous of these abandoned tours over the past few years, and we thought it might be worthwhile to pick out half a dozen of our favourites.

Met Tower

Arguably Glasgow's most prominent abandoned landmark is the 14-storey Met Tower in North Hanover Street, famous for its 'People Make Glasgow' wrap.

Earlier in 2022, YouTuber J T posted a video showing his exploration of the post-war tower, which was formerly the College of Building and Printing tower, was vacated around the time of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and has been off limits to the public ever since.

Cranstonhill Police Station

Back in May, a group of urban adventurers took to TikTok to give us a fascinating peek inside the cells of the abandoned Cranstonhill Police Station at the Anderston end of Argyle Street.

The front desk of the police station and cell areas are shown, with the caption: "Even the cops can't keep us out", with the view of the cells sparking the comment that: "The cells look pretty depressing...don't fancy getting into trouble and locked up like this."

Botanic Gardens Railway

In August 2020, YouTube channel Scotland Lost In Time took us on a fascinating drone fly-through of Glasgow's abandoned Central line, including the fabled Botanic Gardens Station, Kirlee Station and Kelvinbridge Station. The old line opened back in 1894 and was closed in stages after the Second World War.

Balrossie Orphanage

It's fair to say abandoned buildings don't come much more creepy than the crumbling Balrossie Orphanage - just ask urban explorer Kyle Urbex.

Situated 20 miles west of Glasgow, near Kilmacolm, the derelict Balrossie School, which was originally used as a home for the orphaned children of sailors, dates back to 1899, but has lain empty for almost 25 years.

Calderpark Zoo

In this amazing footage, posted to YouTube in January 2022, we're taken on a tour of the abandoned Calderpark Zoo complex.

Having been closed since 2003, the site is considerably overgrown, but there are still a few reminders of the zoo days, including original signage and remains of animal enclosures.

Bellahouston Academy

In 2021, the prolific Kyle Urbex also explored the derelict swimming baths and gymnasium complex of the old Bellahouston Academy in North Gower Street in Cessnock.

Dating from 1875, the B-listed former pool and gym was built at the same time as the original school building, and is to be demolished for 39 new apartments.
