Six Nations permutations: How England can win the title on Super Saturday

All eyes on Paris: France will win the Six Nations if they beat Scotland on Super Saturday - (Getty Images)

The Six Nations title race remains in the balance with just one match remaining on Super Saturday.

As usual the northern hemisphere’s premier rugby competition has not failed to disappoint in 2025, with drama and talking points aplenty over a seven-week championship which draws to an exciting conclusion this evening.

Round five as always sees the end of the split of matches over the course of the weekend, with the three games instead taking place throughout Saturday.

It’s France in pole position after a monstrous second half while missing injured captain Antoine Dupont saw them demolish Ireland 42-27 in the biggest game of the competition in Dublin last weekend, putting them on the brink of a first title since 2022 and only their second since 2010.

England have done their part and are ready to capitalise on any slip-up from Les Bleus against Scotland in Paris. They travelled to Cardiff and put 10 tries past Wales in a remarkable 68-14 win, lifting them up to the top of the standings before France’s match.

The action began in Rome, where wounded Ireland picked up a bonus-point win over Italy, but that will not be enough for the title.

How can France win the Six Nations title?

For France, any sort of victory over Scotland on Saturday night will be enough to clinch the title.

A bonus-point win for scoring four tries is not necessary, due to their mammoth +106 points difference, helped by putting 73 on Italy in round four. By contrast, closest challengers England’s is +74, even with their thrashing of Wales earlier on Saturday.

How can England win the Six Nations title?

England’s bonus-point win over Wales means they now sit top of the standings on 20 points, having won four of their five matches in this year’s Six Nations.

They could not make up the massive points-difference deficit to France, though, and it means they are relying on a big favour from Scotland in Paris.

France must win to secure the Six Nations title. A draw or defeat to Scotland, even with bonus points, and it will be England who are crowned champions.

What about the wooden spoon?

Wales will take home the wooden spoon for the second consecutive year.

They lost all five matches this year, but picked up three bonus points earlier in the championship to at least give them hope of moving off bottom spot heading into their final game against England.

Italy finished on five points after getting a bonus against Ireland and it left Wales knowing that either a win over England, or a defeat that brought two bonus points, would have been enough to move up to fifth.

But Wales were thrashed in Cardiff, leaving them firmly rooted to the foot of the table.
